From "Brooklyn Progress" Borough President Report 1937: "To relieve 39th Street, a connection about 1 mile in length has been completed from 5th Avenue to Fort Hamilton Parkway. This paving job also required extensive grading, construction of ingenious retaining walls and a shelf-like structure over the railroad cut paralleling this route. The photographs of the "before" and "after" on one section illistrate how W.P.A. work has been utilized to convert waste space into a useful highway."
